EHS Students Attend UIL ‘Superconference’
September 19, 21 students and 4 sponsors from EHS attended a series of UIL supplementary and explanatory workshops at the University of North Texas in Denton. The group left from Eastland by bus at 5:30 a.m. and spent the morning listening and participating in preparatory conferences.
UNT invited state sponsors and contest directors for various UIL events such as Computer Applications, Current Issues and Events, Mathematics, One-Act Play, and Speech and Debate. Common purposes of conferences included explaining contest rules, introductions for new participants, and overviews of contest changes.
While most lectures were exclusively verbal, some of the One-Act Play workshops required students to directly participate. In one workshop centered on performing mime, a seasoned mime began by reenacting the events of the Titanic and leading students in a forty minute warm-up. A workshop where students were to ‘liberate themselves physically through mask work’ had participants mimicking a community of monkeys as they develop group roles and simian idiosyncrasies.
Both sponsors and students left the conference with a feeling of preparedness for spring UIL and the satisfaction of a productive day.
