By Cody

Friday, December 11, 2009, 19 students from Eastland High School participated in the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom Scholastic Contest at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. The students, after competing in various UIL-styled tests with no prior preparation, placed first as a school above other participating schools.

After a free breakfast reception, Eastland students spent the day taking multiple-choice tests on such varied subjects as American Government and English Grammar. Participants were also treated to a free game of bowling at the local Academy Lanes bowling alley.

Students who placed in individual events were: Wenjing who placed 2nd in Algebra, Cody who placed 1st in Literature, Ryan who placed 2nd in Psychology, Cody who placed 1st in Texas History, Riley who placed 1st in Biology and 2nd in Chemistry, and Jacob who placed 3rd in Chemistry.

While the scholastic contest was not affiliated with UIL, the Eastland students excelled in the academic competition, bringing home several medals and a first place school trophy.
